I had an amazing opportunity to tell the next generation of girls how important education is to me. Verizon wants to encourage girls in studying science, technology, engineering, and math because there is less than 25% of women in these career fields.
I am so excited to share this video with you and my story how I ended up from studying pharmacy to making cosmetics on YouTube.
Growing up, science was my favorite class besides art. I would get lost in the fascination of how things are made like the invention of electricity. With that knowledge, I am able to share what I have learned as a kid with you. For example my recent tutorial, DIY Vanity Light.
During my senior year of high school, my mom was diagnosed with colon cancer and it was in a stage that was not curable. My world came crashing down to know that my mom didn't have time on her side. My mom wanted to live every second so we tried chemotherapy for a few years. This moment had changed my life that I decided to apply to pharmacy school in hopes to help others with a knowledge in medicine.
I graduated high school with honors but I didn't get into pharmacy school. I was devastated! Many felt that "girls" are not meant to be in the medical and healthcare field. I was not going to let anyone tell me I couldn't make it into pharmacy school. I have to stop that stereotype so I attended a local community college for two years while taking care of my mom.
Going to community college close to home actually worked out because I was able to spend every second with my mom while working on getting great grades to reapply to pharmacy school. My mom loved it that I was able to take her to chemotherapy sessions as she brags how amazing of a daughter I have been. To be honest, she is the AMAZING one! She is so brave to fight cancer. She never gave up on hope even on days when she couldn't do things we talk for granted like getting dressed or walking a block because of her treatment was killing more than her cancer cells. She was so creative on designing clothes and jewelry. I was blessed with her creativity and you already know that I wrote my pharmacy college admission essay all about her as my role model. She was and is still today my world!
I was thrilled to attend Massachusetts College Of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and was the youngest in my class. My mom was so proud of the woman I was becoming. I can still remember her unique giggle and her contagious smile when I read my acceptance letter. I was amazed at how much I learned from school!
Skin care intrigued me the most because I love using beauty products and was trying so hard to get rid of my acne and eczema. My mom develop server acne from her chemotherapy treatment. She hated it and I wanted to do whatever to cheer her up. I learned that knowing the specific ingredient that treat or manage a skin condition was a way I could help others when I was working at a retail pharmacy because it helped my family and friends. They loved it when I recommended a product or give them advice to better skin care routine.
After my mom lost her battle to cancer, it made me think what I else I could do for others in the future. I was constantly crying from losing my best friend and idol. I am still coping from losing her but now, I think of how she inspired me to help others. She would give whatever she could to others in need and care for them. It is why I carry my heart on my sleeves.
In my second year of pharmacy school, I felt so confined to one subject of studies that I lost interest. I was empty inside until I was diagnosed with ADHD. Having this disorder opened my eyes to where I needed to focus on. I needed to do more in my life for her, myself, and others that I will encounter.
After leaving pharmacy school, I realized that my passion was more than medicine or health care. At the time, I was so lost and could not focus on finishing pharmacy school to save my life! I wanted to take my science and pharmacy background to the next level by sharing it to the world so I changed my career goals to mix style, art, and science. Now, I am here doing what I love on YouTube like my recent eye gel and eye cream recipe that I made for this video. I feel elated to create videos for viewers to entertain, laugh, and learn something from my random topics of interest because I am still learning myself. Making videos is my way of recording my journey to motivate others that no matter what sorts of adversity or challenge you might face, you can conquer it one step at a time.
My mom was a fashionista and so innovated with the clothes that she made for my brother and I from thrift stores. Many thought we were well off because my mom would always make sure we were sharply dressed. We didn't have much financially but we had the most powerful thing everyone should experience; it's love. Sometimes when I was hungry, I would inhale a few package of ketchup that I took from fast food restaurant to curb my hunger until my parents were able to get food for the family. It is so true that kids cannot function on an empty stomach! I ended up daydreaming majority of my time in elementary school. I have no idea how I graduated to move on to middle school. If you ask me anything about history or english, I wouldn't be able to tell you. Know matter what, my family did their best to give me the opportunity to have a better and brighter future. I am so blessed for that!
I think my mom would be happy that I am helping others by educating them on ingredients and how to make their own cosmetics. This is thanks to my time majoring in liberal arts and science with a few years of pharmacy school under my education belt. I truly believe in a balance of natural and synthetic medicine because of my of my studies in science and pharmacology. I am able to embrace it with each recipe I have developed and tested for my viewers. Thank you to all my subscribers for inspiring me on my mission to spread my ideas to the whole wide world.
